In Pastor's Message

Dear Holy Cross Members and Friends,

What a wonderful weekend we had together.  Thanks to all of you who had a part in our Celebration of Love on Mother’s Day.  A special thank you to Michelle Caldwell and the children for those beautiful roses.  It was fun sharing my mom’s Mother’s Day story with you and honoring such a diverse array of mothers.  Love never runs out, so keep on sharing it every day in every way you can.

There are many activities going on around our church over the next several weeks.  I hope will carefully look over our calendar and do your best to participate in as much of it as possible.  On June 9 from 6PM until 10PM, I will be offering my Marriage Preparation Course again.  This course is approved by Escambia County and will enable couples to waive the three-day waiting period for a marriage license and give them a $30 discount on the license fee.  The course certificate is good for one year, so if you’re considering marriage, this might be an important part of your preparation.  The cost is $30.00 per couple.  Registration is available via email to office@holycrossmcc.com.  The course is limited to 30 couples.

On June 14, we will offer our next Membership Class for those considering membership in Holy Cross MCC.  This course explores the history of Metropolitan Community Churches, our core values, and the requirements of membership in Holy Cross MCC.  We see videos of MCC founder, Rev. Troy Perry.  We’ll talk about ministry opportunities around our church, learn a bit about each ministry leader, and share about our own spiritual journeys in order to build community with the group.  We’ll learn about our Guidelines for Working together and talk about baptism and rites of membership.  This is a fast-moving class packed full of information about the places from which we’ve come and the ways we “do” church in 2015.  Those interested in joining us should register via email to office@holycrossmcc.com.  The course will take place after the morning worship service and meal on June 14.

In preparation for Sunday’s Lessons on Sanctification, I’ve been reading a The Hole in Our Holiness, by Kevin DeYoung.  In the book he writes,

“The hole in our holiness is that we don’t really care much about it.  Passionate exhortation to pursue gospel-driven holiness is barely heard in most churches.  It’s not that we don’t talk about sin or encourage decent behavior…Any gospel which says only what you must do an never announces what Christ has done is no gospel at all….I’m talking about the failure of Christians, especially younger (ones), to take seriously one of the great aims of our redemption and one of the required evidences for eternal life – holiness.”[1]

On Sunday we will answer the questions, “What is Sanctification,” and “What is Holiness.”  We will explore some steps toward holiness as we consider the words of the Psalmist and the Gospel message from Mark.  We really can achieve holiness in our lives as we encounter the ongoing presence of Jesus in our lives.

Thanks for all you do to make the ministry of Holy Cross MCC possible.  We’re changing lives with the message of God’s all-inclusive love.  Come this Sunday and bring some friends as we enjoy another wonderful Worship Celebration together.
